Warm bread from woodburning oven

freshly baked at The National Forest Wood Fair

Visitors to the National Forest Wood Fair at Beacon Hill Country Park on Bank Holiday Monday 29 August 2005 will be greeted by the tantalising aroma of freshly baked bread hot out of a woodburning oven.

Melton Mowbray-based company, Paul's, which supplies organic food including breads, fruit and vegetables, will be coming to the Bank Holiday event with its mobile woodburning oven - the smell of which is guaranteed to lure the crowds.

The German-built oven, made from steel, brick and metal, weighs more than a tonne and will be fuelled to reach its optimum 300 degrees centigrade at the event by wood grown and felled in The National Forest.  At the Woodfair, Paul's will be encouraging visitors to experience food fresh from the wood burning oven and try their hand at making their own pizzas.  Baked in the oven for seven minutes, the pizzas will be ready to eat there and then or to take home to enjoy later.

Paul Jones, founder of Paul's, said: "The woodburning oven uses ancient technology and bakes bread in the traditional old fashioned way.  Much of our food heritage has been lost through industrialisation and globalisation but people are desperately hungry for real food and want to know more about where their food is coming from.  Our ethos is to provide organic, natural, healthy foods, sourced locally wherever possible."

Paul continued: "The woodburning oven is fantastic as it links with The National Forest principal of encouraging the use of wood over other non-renewable energy resources such as gas or coal."

Paul's will also have a huge range of its breads to taste and buy at the Woodfair.  These are baked in Melton Mowbray from locally grown organic wheat, which is milled at a nearby windmill in Whissendine to provide a genuine taste of the Midlands.

Other local food producers coming along to tempt the taste buds of visitors to the event will be Beth's Kitchen from Home Farm, Nanpantan.  Renowned for its excellent organic foods, Beth's Kitchen will have local organic foods, spit roast and steak burgers on offer at the Woodfair.

Wood-based demonstrations will be taking place throughout the entire day such as making traditional cart wheels, using carpentry tools, the ancient craft of longbows and demonstrations from artists that use wood as their medium.

There will also be hands-on activities for visitors to try such as pole lathe turning, tree climbing, building bird boxes and willow weaving.

The aim of the woodfair is to increase understanding and appreciation of woodlands, highlight the range of suppliers and producers of wood based products in and around The National Forest and promote the use of timber.

Dr Hugh Williams from the National Forest Company said: "The Wood Fair will be a great family day out.  As well as having a go at some of the activities, visitors can browse the stands offering a huge array of unique wood products and laden with scrumptious local foods while learning a little more about woodlands.

"Through the event, we want to promote the importance of good woodland management and the use of wood - a vital renewable resource.  Already six million trees have been planted in the growing National Forest.  These new woodlands need to be nurtured and managed in order to be sustainable Forests for the future.  As part of this, some trees will need removing to encourage growth in the remaining trees and maintain a healthy and diverse woodland".

Keen gardeners can gain advice on their trees from tree experts at the event.  And on display there will be rustic furniture, willow sculptures, wooden art and timber framed buildings.  There will be timber and tools for sale as well as examples of carpentry, sawmilling, wood turning and charcoal burning.  Woodland story telling will keep the children enthralled while dads and mums can have a go at green wood working or one of the many other activities on offer.

The Wood Fair is organised by The National Forest Company and Leicestershire County Council in partnership with the Leicester Shire Economic Partnership.  The Wood Fair will run from 10am-6pm and guarantees a great Bank Holiday Monday!  Admission charges include car parking and a programme and will cost adults £5, Concessions £3 and a family ticket £12 (for two adults and two children).

Beacon Hill Country Park lies within the ancient Forest of Charnwood and is close to the attractive village of Woodhouse Eaves, just five minutes drive from Junctions 22 or 23 of the M1.  The Country Park, owned and managed by Leicestershire County Council, with its craggy summit and fantastic views, is just one of the many visitor attractions across the three counties that make up The National Forest.
